Lorene Hopkins Sandstrom was the daughter of Sarah Orillia Tillotson and William Thaddeus Hopkins. Lorene was very interested in genealogy and frequently corresponded with her many cousins about family history. Several years after Lorene's death her son Thad was tragically shot to death.


Teacher's Services Tuesday

Services for Mrs. Lorene Hopkins Sandstrom, 68, 2924 N. 11th, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Pilgrim Congregational church.

Mrs. Sandstrom, sixth grade teacher at Hazel Grove school, died Sunday afternoon at Providence hospital where she had been since Wednesday when she suffered a head injury in collapsing at the school after classes.

Burial will be in Memorial Park cemetery. Friends may call at the Gibson-Butler Funeral home, 19th and Minnesota, from 7 to 9 p.m. today.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the First Pilgrim Congregational church of which Mrs. Sandstrom was a member.

She was a substitute teacher in the local public school system both before and after her marriage, a total of 24 years. For the last eight years she had taught at Hazel Grove school in Washington district.

Born in Hutchinson, Kan., she had lived here about 50 years. She was the widow of Carl M. Sandstrom, retail grocers leader, who died in 1960. The couple was married in 1922. After her husband's death, Mrs. Sandstrom obtained an AB degree from Central Missouri State college, Warrensburg.

She was a member of James Ross chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, the Western Highlands Study club and the YWCA.

Surviving are two sons, Thad M. Sandstrom, vice president and general manager of WIBW radio and TV, Topeka, and Gus A. Sandstrom, San Antonia, Tex., where he is associated with GMC Truck and Coach division, General Motors, and three grandchildren.

She will lie in state from 7 to 9 p.m. today at Gibson-Butler Funeral Home at Kansas City, Kan. Contributions may be made to the memorial fund at First Pilgrim Congregational Church at Kansas City, Kan.

Mrs. Sandstrom was born Jan, 3, 1898. She spent most of the life in Kansas City, Kan. She was graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1916. Formerly she was a substitute teacher in Kansas City, Kan., schools and had taught at Hazel Grove five years.

She was a member of First Pilgrim Congregational Church, the chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution and the YWCA, all at Kansas City. She was a member of the Kansas State Teachers Assn. and National Education Assn.

Her husband, Carl Sandstrom, died in February 1960.

Surviving are another son, Gus A. Sandstrom of San Antonio, Texas, and three grandchildren.
